Experience

Finished projects

EthicSchool training courses have been developed and tested in successive projects: EthicSchool.eu, EthicSchool.nl, NanoEIS, NMP-DeLA, SUN, Nano2All, RiskGONE and the CBRN export control targeted initiative of ISTC. Download the full list of finished projects here.

Publications

In addition to Future Technologies We Want, I have published several peer-reviewed publications including some addressing  the EthicSchool methodology. Scroll down for more info or download the full list of publications here.

Lectures

I regularly give lectures for researchers, policy makers, entrepreneurs, civil society and others. I also wrote some popular articles on technology and society. Scroll down for more info or download the full list of presentations here.

EthicSchool training in projects.

In the framework of the Targeted Initiative on CBRN export control of the International Science and Technology Center in Kazakhstan, I contributed 2 lectures on ethics and responsible innovation in dual use research, 12-13/10/2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan and 14-15/03/2018 in Kiev, Ukraine. I also contributed to the Responsible Innovation in Dual Use Life Sciences course, 17-19/05/2019 in Armenia and the online Virtual course on this topic  on the ISTC website.

In Nano2All we have integrated trainings in nanotechnology, Responsible Research and Innovation, dialogue techniques and future explorations into dialogue workshops for citizens and stakeholders. Online self-study materials are available via the website.

In the European Sustainable Nanotechnologies project I have trained young researchers in Do-It-Yourself Ethics of Nanomaterials at the Sustainable Nanotechnology Schools in Venice, Italy, 2015 and 2016. The EthicSchool concept of responsible innovation has been further developed in three meetings in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

In the European project NMP-DeLA I have provided Do-It-Yourself Ethics training for young researchers during summer schools in Argentina (May 2014) and Mexico (October 2014). During NMP-DeLA workshops for researchers, policy makers and companies in Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Brazil, ethical and social aspects of key technology were also discussed.

In the European project NanoEIS a model curriculum has been developed, to prepare students for jobs in nanotechnology companies. Ethical and societal aspects are part of this. I have organized workshops with stakeholders in The Netherlands and Poland.

3 EthicSchool workshops were held in 2012-2013. On 6-11-2012, the Biosecurity-by-Design workshop, for biosecurity professionals, in collaboration with Koos van der Bruggen. On March 21, and 30, 2013, I led the game on human enhancement, with citizens. From 9 to 13 September 2013, the online EthicSchool summer school was held for researchers, with lectures by Ineke Malsch, Guido Gorgoni, Lotte Krabbenborg, Paulo Martins, Brigitte Biermann, Jürgen Altmann, Alexei Grinbaum, Donald Bruce and Astrid Schwarz.

EthicSchool started as a European project in 2007-2009. As project leader I organized summer schools for researchers on ethics of nanotechnology and of converging technology, together with professors Arie Rip (University of Twente), Jean-Pierre Wils (Radboud University) and Alfred Nordmann, assisted by Dr Maria Angeles Quesada (TU Darmstadt, Germany) .

The presentations and background materials of the EthicSchool summer schools from 2008 were collected on an e-learning DVD, with a circulation of 500 copies.
