Pax Christi International connects Latin American activists to international law-makers
The extraction of fossil fuels and minerals which are essential elements of a wide range of products including renewable energy, computers, and mobile phones, is often accompanied with pollution and human rights violations of local communities in the mining regions.
On 30 April 2021,
Pax Christi International
offered Latin American activists the opportunity to express their complaints during the webinar Access to Justice for Latin American Communities Resisting Extractive Companies. The activists were offered concrete opportunities to influence decision making on the binding Human Rights treaty regulating the activities of international business which is currently tabled by the
Human Rights Council
and to give input into policy discussions on a mandatory system of due diligence for supply chains in the
European Union. In addition, the
Laudato Si Action Platform
engages local communities in achieving sustainability in seven years, inspired by Pope Francis.
The webinar addresses legal solutions to responsible innovation for sustainable development discussed in my book
Future Technologies We Want,
where I argue for combining technological, social as well as legal solutions for three cases including conflicts over mining.
