In 2023, EthicSchool played an active role in three initiatives that put people at the heart of sustainable development. In Utrecht, dialogue with citizens with a small budget was the starting point in Sustainable Utrecht 2030. Sustainable Utrecht 2030 was awarded one of the three U Awards of Utrecht 4 Global Goals. This newsletter provides an overview of the results achieved and a first sketch of the follow-up.
As the Dutch contact person of the African Network for Solar Energy, we helped build research capacity in the field of sustainable energy in Africa, by seeking funding and partners for the implementation of the ANSOLE Energy Compact. Specifically, we supported Dr. Rahimat Yakubi in her PhD research, in 2022 thanks to a contribution from the municipality of Utrecht from the Here and There fund of Utrecht 4 Global Goals, and in 2023 from our own resources. On November 24, 2023, she obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Energy Technologies from Kwame Nkruma University of Technology in Ghana. As one of the thirty L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talents Sub-Saharan Africa Awards winners, she will continue her research in the coming period.
Based on the results of the European project RiskGONE, I lead the ethical pillar in the International Networking Initiative on Safe and Sustainable Nanotechnology, part of the Nanosafety Cluster. In 2023, we carried out several activities in this network, including the sixth EU-Asian dialogue on Nanosafety in Berlin on 21 June, and an online seminar on the precautionary principle with Prof Guillermo Foladori on 9 October. This webinar was co-facilitated by ANSOLE.
