Recently, the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) in Kazakhstan published a virtual course on ethics and responsible research for scientists working in dual use life sciences, based on my concept and contents. The course starts by an introduction of core concepts related to responsible research and innovation, dual use and export control in module 1. Module 2 addresses the special role of scientists in collective responsible governance of dual use science and technology. In module 3, ethical dilemmas scientists face in practice are discussed. Finally, module 4 raises awareness of the international legal context. A brief introduction addresses the relevance of the course to the work of the ISTC and an annotated reading list includes suggestions for further reading. Maria Espona and Kamshat Saginbekova contributed contents to module 4.The project team of the Targeted Initiative on CBRN Export Control on Dual-Use Materials and Intangible Technologies commented on and edited the material.
